I wanted to write this piece sooner but I wanted to avoid being called a bitter singleton at all costs, but I really do not understand the point of St Valentine’s Day. It seems so futile to me.
I’ll admit, I had no Valentine this year, or any other year for that matter. But what makes no sense to me is why there is an allocated day to show the person you love how much you care about them.
If you’re in a loving relationship, why can’t you do that whenever you please? Surely it’s more romantic that way due to the element of surprise.
If you expect some sort of act of love on Valentine’s Day then you’ll either be bitterly disappointed when they forget to do anything, or you’ll be comparing to last year’s gesture in which case it’s an impossible task to try to out-do yourself year on year.
Either that or they’ll be compared to an ex which is plain and simply unfair.
It used to be a day when a secret admirer could sneak a caring card into your bag when you weren’t looking. That’s sweet. That’s romance.
Now the day has been pumped up with steroids by global companies looking to make a killing out of lovers trying their best to appease their partner. Not my idea of love at all.
Why should we have to prove our love? You should love your partner and expect nothing more from them than for that love to be requited.
